Brownsville, Texas - August 2011 -Installation has begun on bilingual signs that are part of the Brownsville 21: Discovering Brownsville's Historic Places project. These signs are located along the walking tour routes in and around Historic Downtown Brownsville. All the chosen sign locations are deemed to be important facets of Brownsville's long and colorful history. The information on the plaques corresponds to information found in the downtown visitor kiosks and walking tour maps currently in production.
The bilingual signs are part of a larger City of Brownsville, Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation (BCIC) and Brownsville Historical Association (BHA) project that includes photomurals, digital MP3 bilingual walking tours, kiosks, bilingual CD driving tours, and brochures promoting the historic downtown Brownsville, Fort Brown and the Historic City Cemetery. This project is a component of the Preserve America grant received by the City of Brownsville. Brownsville received its Preserve America designation in 2007.
The signs are funded through the Brownsville-21: Discovering Brownsville's Historic Places project sponsored by Preserve America and the Department of the Interior.
