The Brownsville-21 Project is a multifaceted project that includes walking tours, photomurals,  and information kiosks that serve to preserve the colorful history of the City of Brownsville.  The Brownsville-21 project was made possible by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Preserve America, the City of Brownsville and the Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation.

The Old City Cemetery, established in 1851, was the primary cemetery for Brownsville until the establisment of the Buena Vista Cemetery in 1915.  Burials still continue today on a limited basis and the cemetery is home to families and persons of interest from Brownsville's long past.

The cemetery markers installed as part of the Brownsville-21 project are visible from the main walkway of the cemetery.  They are not described on walking tour media.  Thse markers describe notable individuals who shaped our history or describe aspects of the cemetery which makes it unique enough to make it a nationally recognizes historic site.
